Awkward I

The year is almost over and i feel kinda blue. I dont really know why because I guess 2011 is going to be a good year with some changes in my life (not big ones but it's the small things that matters). Anyway... my mood is pathetic and there's nothing you can do about it. So maybe that's the reason why I like this band so much right now: Awkward I (even the name fits my mood!). Again a nice dutch indie band that proves the dutch music scene is apparently underrated. The band formed around songwriter Djurre de Haan who started to record songs in his bathroom. Later he moved to the states where he (ironically) lived in Holland, Michigan. It was a really formative time for him but he moved again to his homecountry, this time Amsterdam. Some musicians joined him and so Awkward I was born. In December 2008 Excelsior Recordings decided to release the debut album “I Really Should Whisper”.
I was surprised to see that the band will play a show in Magdeburg. But the location Riff is always good for surprises! You can see them on thursday, december 30, at 7pm. I hope I can make it to the show.

I'm not really a big fan of this whole christmas thing. I just like to hang out with my family and watch fairy tales on television. And this year I even have to work at christmas time. Whatever... What an awesome show! ASIWYFA just made this concert a very special sound experience! They played all my favorite songs such as "Set Guitars To Kill" and "A Little Bit of Solidarity Goes a Long Way" and many others. Mutiny On The Bounty did a very great job too. And I really liked the Comet Club. Made some photos with a small digicam (thanks to Nadine for joining me and the nice sleeping place!).

Keep an eye on: Audiotransparent - dutch indie slow-fi

I'm always happy when musicians/bands write me an email and want me to post something about them. Happened so in this case... Chris van der Ploeg wrote me and made me curious about his band called Audiotransparent. I checked it and I really like the songs and the music. I hope you do so too... this dutch band creates beautiful melancholic indie pop songs for heart and soul - pretty good for the winter mood. They released three albums until now: audiotransparent (2003), Nevland (2005) and chekhov guns (2009). They already played shows in Canada, Germany and Scandinavia and I guess there are plans for touring soon again. Next to The Black Atlantic (who I love) a promising dutch indie band for me. Audiotransparent call as influences: Talk Talk, Hood, the Beach Boys, Can, XTC, Pedro the Lion, Notwist, Kraftwerk, The Smiths, Neil Young.

Time to talk: Mike Law from New Idea Society

Mike Law is songwriter and singer/guitarist of the Brooklyn based band NEW IDEA SOCIETY. The band recently released the newest record Somehow Disappearing including 12 of finest indie pop songs full of emotion, spirit and desire. For me a proper reason to ask the bands mastermind Mike Law about current issues, past lifes and thoughts about future. Here you go...

Your third album is out. What are you feeling about it? How is the feedback so far?
It is by far the best feedback we have received about an album.
How and when did you start with the band? I often read that you are the head of the band. Do your members constellation often change?
It is true that I am the only one who has always been in the band.  I don't think that it necessarily makes me the head of the band however. I can't play piano the way that Chris can so I can't be the head of the piano department. I don't have the same interest in learning computer programs like Marshall so I can't be the head of the art department. But I guess unlike the others I have a general take on everything that happens in the band. But creatively I rarely try to enforce my will. I respect the others in the band.  If I REALLY don't like what they are playing or they REALLY don't like what I want them to play we probably won't end up playing that particular song. So yes, there are some ways in which things center around me, but not always. I do not want to be the dictator in any band but I am also aware that I think about the band the most.
What are your musical roots? Which bands had and have still influence on you?
I will always love Fugazi, Woody Guthrie, Robert Smith and PJ Harvey. They all have indelible links in my mind. I also remember specific songs from growing up that would come on the radio and really catch my imagination. "My Best Friends Girlfriend" by the Cars, "Playing with the Queen Of Hearts" by Juice Newton, "Nobody's Gonna Break My Stride". I remember those on the radio. I even remember being really interested in Neil Diamond, he was so dramatic, "Never Tear Us Apart" by INXS, but the first song that really, really, really made my mind explode was "Ana Ng" by They Might Be Giants. I saw that video on at 2am and it looked and sounded as though it was made by aliens. I loved it. I held my breath. I also had a similar reaction to "Wild, Wild, Life" by Talking Heads.
You had this band called EULCID. I saw some videos and I really like it. What do you think about it when you look back at the time?
I think that it was a very special time for me. I was touring America relentlessly for the first few times. We played shows with bands I love like Cave In, Isis, Sinaloa, Orchid, Ire, At the Drive In, and seemingly every band you can think of from that era. We even had our last shows with Fugazi! Being in that van ALL the time and touring was something that made me feel free like I could do whatever I wanted to do. If I felt like booking an entire U.S. tour I would just start picking up the phone and calling people, then I would say... "Hey, I know you are in Chicago, but do you know anyone in Milwaukee". That is how things went and I still keep that with me. I feel as though if I want to do something then I will begin the process myself. I am also very lucky that The Wind Blew All the Fires Out has endured so well as an album. People still note it as a favorite after all this time.

You already toured germany with NIS. What do you think about the german music scene?
I don't feel as though I have really got to know the German music scene the way I would like too. Maybe on this tour it will finally happen. I think we are more linked to Berlin this time than before. We also did play some smaller towns on the last tour. I really enjoyed that. Playing smaller towns is my favorite.
Do you like a special german band?

Somehow Disappearing is one of my fav records at the moment. What if I say, compare your new album with the ones before. What changed?
This is a studio album in the sense that we recorded it track by track, instrument by instrument. We made it with someone who is a real producer. Andy LeMaster was on our wave length from the beginning. From the second I met him I felt like we were very close. We wanted to create sonic space and have the instruments create a song by their combination. The World Is Bright and Lonely was a collection of songs. Andrew Schneider is an equally amazing producer, but it was a different kind of album. He didn't have a chance to be as much of a producer in the same way because of the process we used. We recorded it in a very arrogant way. All the instruments live as well as the singing, everyone in one room. In fact some of the band had never met each other before the first day of recording. I had never met the drummer. We were done tracking in four days. It was a very arrogant way to make an album. I wish that we had made it fewer songs... it was too long. To arrogant... ha.
But pretty awesome though! My favorite song on the album is Thorns… Do you have one?
Usually Halluminations or Disappearing. Halluminations is as close to sounding in the recording how it sounded in my head as anything I have ever made. It also has that beautiful harpsichord part on the bridge that Chris wrote the day before he recorded it or something. It seemed to come out of nowhere. I think the song is very original sounding. I like Disappearing because the piano and guitar seem to blend into one which was a goal. I guess Autumn You, and Szep Sziv mean a lot to me.... it changes by the sentence. It wouldn't have been put on the album if it didn't mean something. We cut 8 songs from the album. It is a very sad album to me actually, though it has a deeply romantic theme in it and those two things combined are always hopeful.

You’re gonna come to Europe and Germany soon! What are your expectations?
I think it will be too cold. By the last count I think it was 16 countries! I hope that it is a fun tour and that people are excited to hear the new album. We are putting more effort into this tour than anything we have EVER done. I hope that everyone tells their friends about the album and tour. Word of mouth is still the best part of DIY. 
What is the weirdest thing that ever happened to you on tour?
Does breaking a lot of bones on the Autobahn count? I almost drowned in Montana swimming in an underground cave...  
Sounds like you would die for music. What is your inspiration for making music? Do you have another passion?
I do not mean this to sound sarcastic, but I don't really have any other interests. I have always just wanted to sing songs. It is the only thing I have ever been interested in.
Could you imagine to play in any other band?
No. 
You are part of Translator Audio Studio. When did this studio start and what does it mean to you to produce other bands? (the list of clients is pretty impressive)
Thanks, I helped build the studio over the last 6 years. I had my own studios before that and my friend Steve and I bought some gear to record You Are Awake Or Asleep. I only produce bands that I really like. I cannot do it for the money, otherwise I would end up hating the band and everything about it. I do not have patience to work on music for money. I would rather work at a grocery store or painting a house for money than work on music I don't really like.
What are your plans with NIS?
We are leaving to tour with Minus the Bear and Tim Kasher in a few days. When we get home we will try and finish a few new songs to play on the European tour... and a special surprise or two! Then after Europe I think it will be time for a new recording before we go to Japan for tour.
Which record do you listen to at the moment?
I spent all day today and yesterday listening to Prince.

Joan of Arc live in Berlin @ Bang Bang Club

Four days after my trip to berlin to see Les Savy Fav @ Festsaal Kreuzberg (btw - it was an awesome show but I didn`t take any pictures, so sorry for that) we came back to berlin to see the great guys of JOAN OF ARC @ BangBangClub supported by LOVE OF EVERYTHING and m0ck.
First to say: it was so damn good seeing those guys live! All of them! Tim Kinsella (drums) and Bobby Burg (Vocals) played together as Love of Everything and gave a good foretaste of what would follow. Bobbys voice is really emotional but the voice of Kinsella really gave me the creeps when JOA was playing. He acted pretty nice with the audience and told about his highschool years "I grew up in a hispanic neighborhood but I took german lessons in school. One day I asked my teacher: Why do we learn german? And she answered: Because I speak it. Yeah, that was a good reason..."  Members who were on stage in berlin: Tim Kinsella, Bobby Burg, Theo Katsaounis and Victor Villareal.
After the show Bobby invited me and my friend to come "downstairs" to drink some beer. We really had a good conversation and so we decided to eat some pizza together at Rosenthaler Platz in Mitte. Bobbys favorite band is No Age right now! What a nice end of a day night! Thanks to all of the bands and to Björn Bauch for booking them. Sleepytime Trio

Die Band Sleepytime Trio aus dem Raum Washington D. C. gehört seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre zu den kontinuierlich spielenden Emobands. Ihr Sound ist typisch für das Genre: mit-tempo D.C. Hardcore mit ruhigeren, monotoneren Momenten und emotionalem Gesang sowie auf der anderen Seite aggressivem, chaotischerem Gitarrenspiel und – teils brachialen – Schreiparts. Die Band steht für das D.I.Y.-Prinzip, macht keine Werbung, spielt nicht in einem größeren kommerziell ausgerichteten Rahmen sondern bevorzugt eher Kellerräume und Alternative Zentren. Sleepytime Trio started out in Harrisonburg, Virginia, as a side project of the band Maximillian Colby in the fall of 1994. Sleepytime Trio was originally Drew Ringo on guitar, Ben Davis on bass, and Jonathan Fuller on drums. They played shows around the mid-Atlantic region and then in the summer of ‘95 added guitarist Dave Nesmith who played with Drew in Maximillian Colby. As Maximillian Colby began dissipating, Sleepytime Trio became everybody’s full time band and started playing more. With the line-up established, the no longer three-piece Sleepytime Trio did a whirlwind tour in the summer of 1996, playing 20 shows in 17 days, going from Virginia to Florida, Chicago, Quebec, and back to Washington, DC. Fear Before the March of Flames

Fear Before the March of Flames was one of the first hardcore/screamo bands I've seen live. I don't know exactly but I think it was 2006 when I saw them play in Berlin/Magnet Club supporting The Fall of Troy and The Bled. But I can actually remember that I just wanted to see the show because of The Bled (I pretty much loved the band at this time). But after the show I was kinda overwhelmed by Fear Before and (of course) The Fall of Troy. This mainly guided me to order some CDs, for ex. Art Damage by Fear Before. They obviously shortened their longer name. They formed 2002 in Colorado and play some sort of progressive-experimental hardcore-screamo-mathcore-sound. Their second record Art Damage was released on Equal Vision Records and draws more math/metal-sound. I guess I prefer the older records. Take a listen: MYSPACE / HP / equalvision

DEAN DIRG is ne Punkband, und was für eine: kaum ein Song geht über eine Minute und springt dir dafür aber direkt ins Gesicht. Wär ja sonst auch wohl alles zu langweilig... Nicht nur optisch (Vokuhila, Schnauzer und Jeansweste), sondern auch musikalisch stehen Dean Dirg voll auf die trashigen 80er. Im Interview auf die Optik angesprochen, kam: Warum muss Doph immer so albern aussehen und ihr nicht? Torsten: Der Doph, das ist ein Paradiesvogel, und das ist ein offenes Geheimnis. Das ist ja auch ein bisschen Show, man will die Leute unterhalten. Wenn der sich jetzt ein cooles HAVE HEART-Shirt anzieht und coole Nikes, das wäre doch total langweilig, das machen doch schon HAVE HEART. (ox-fanzine)
2008 hab ich die Jungs mal beim Fluff Fest in Rokycany live sehen können, war echt ne witzige und unterhaltsame Show, jedenfalls wirken Dean Dirg ziemlich "real" und ziehen ihr Ding durch. Sänger Doph (Mitte) hat sich sogar Zeit für einen Schnappschuss mit zwei meiner Festival-Begleiter genommen...good old times http://www.deandirg.net/

xo skeletons

I really used to listen to this band pretty often some years ago. Found it in my library again... XO Skeletons is a mix of different styles as hardcore, electro, hip-hop and punk. What I really love about the music is the singer! haha. Wes Eisold is kind of an icon in american hardcore/punk scene, came along with bands like American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost, Cold Cave and Some Girls (saw them live in berlin some years ago... what a crazy bunch of dudes!). I really don't know if XO Skeletons still play shows or something... let me know if you know! You can download the 8 track album Bored By Heaven HERE.

And So I Watch You From Afar

This band's music really wants to make me bang my head and jump around like a bouncy ball and in the other minute it gets me an emotional implosion just because of the overwhelming sound cloud. And I think I don't overact by saying that these irish guys really know how to play instrumental postrock. ASIWYFA really got my attention as I saw one of their shows in german television. The live performance is easily stunning. I guess the song Set Guitars To Kill is one of my favs at the moment. I hope I can see them live soon cause they are coming to germany in december. MYSPACE

Trust Fanzine #144

Heute mal das Trust Fanzine (Nr.144 Oktober/November 2010) am Bahnhof gekauft, um die lange Zugfahrt nach Berlin rumzukriegen... schön amüsiert über die Kolumnen am Heftanfang (gut geschrieben, die wenigen Rechtschreib- und Grammatikfehler - jaja, Journalistikstudent,tzzz - mal charmant übersehn). Vor allem die letzte von Raphael fand ich lesenswert! Reviews und Interviews mit/über Deftones, Mi Ami, Hard-Ons, Goldust und Matula sind enthalten, sowie ein Interview mit den Goldenen Zitronen (dafür muss ich mir nochma Zeit nehmen). Mit Freude hab ich festgestellt, dass bei den kurzen Plattenkritiken auch die Scheibe von Average Engines (letztens in Salzwedel live gesehn) dabei ist, die mit explosivem Chaos-Hardcore und zuckersüßem Emo-Pop kategorisiert wird. Ebenso erfreut war ich über das Auftreten von Empty Guns und Paan im Heft, ebenfalls zwei Bands, die ich schon öfters live sehen konnte... Fazit: Nettes Heft für 2 Mark 50, die sich definitiv lohnen. Bin sogar am überlegen nen Abo zu bestellen (bloß nicht zu laut sagen hier... längerfristige Investitionen sind als Student/Volontär so gut wie unmöglich).  CHECK

News about: The Get Up Kids

Die Emo/Alternative-Rocker von The Get Up Kids haben eine neue Seven-Inch mit dem Namen "Automatic" angekündigt. Nach der verworfenen Idee der Band, eine EP-Reihe zu veröffentlichen, soll nun ein neues Album im Frühjahr 2011 erscheinen ( motor.de berichtete ). "Automatic" ist nach der EP "Simple Science" das zweite Release nach der Reunion der Get Up Kids vor zwei Jahren. Wann die Seven-Inch genau auf den Markt kommt, ist bisher noch nicht bekannt. Dafür enthüllte die Band bereits das Cover auf ihrer MySpace-Seite: Frontmann Matt Pryor hat unterdessen eine Tour durch die Staaten angekündigt, die er zusammen mit Dustin Kensrue, Kopf der Post-Hardcoreband Thrice , bestreiten wird. Außerdem sind Kollegen von Bayside und Saves The Day mit von der Partie. Auf der Bühne wird Pryor sowohl Songs der Get Up Kids als auch von seinem Soloalbum "Confidence Man" zum Besten geben.

One for the Team / Homegrown In The Zone Festival 2011

...and then POP goes my heart! Wird ja auch mal Zeit n bisschen "Mädchenmusik" zu posten (übrigens: ich bin eins)... One for the Team sind ne Band aus Minneapolis (midwest-yeah!) und machen sehr feinen Indierockpop. Diesen durfte ich auch schon live erleben und zwar letztes Jahr beim Homegrown In The Zone Festival in Tangermünde. Der zweistimmige Gesang geht gut ins Ohr, die Songs sind eingängig und locker-flockig, wat will man mehr? Lieblingstrack so far: Apples. Check them aus hier OFTT und BLOG.
Das Festival fiel dieses Jahr zwar aus, aber die 7. Auflage ist für den 2. Juli 2011 angesetzt. Ein nettes Rahmenprogramm mit Skatecontest, Basketball und Veganfood macht dieses kleine Fest sehr attraktiv! Ich freue mich jetzt schon ma drauf... Mehr Infos dazu unter: homegrowninthezone.

Average Engines @ Crazy World Salzwedel

Gestern (nach langer Zeit) mal wieder ein gutes Konzert in Salzwedel (ja, da wohne ich zurzeit) besucht! Hatte erst ein paar Tage vorher von der Show erfahren und bin darum auch recht erwartungslos (aber dafür mit Kamera) ins Crazy World (Musikkneipe 5 Minuten umme Ecke von mir) gegangen. Angekündigt waren Average Engines und Return To Peeze. Vor allem von den Hamburger Jungens von Average Engines war ich positiv überrascht, steht doch bei MySpace als Beschreibung "Rock? Pop? Experimental Dingens-Core-Gelöt?!" und "Gesang-Gitarren-Bass-Schlagzeug-Sampler-Synthesizer-Metaltechno" mit der man erstmal nich soviel anfangen kann. Es sollte auf jeden Fall laut und schnell werden - ja, so mag ichs! Die Platte "If Dalí Broke My Arm It Would Sound Like This" wurde einst in der Visions gelobt und als fantasievolle Krawallmusik betitelt. Trifft es ganz gut, wie ich finde. In eine Schublade möchte ich die Band aber auch nicht stecken, dafür sind die Einflüsse wohl einfach zu breitgefächert. Den Jungs machte es auch nichts aus, dass nur wenige Leute ihre Show sahen, was sie umso symphatischer macht! Jedenfalls wars n super Konzert, schön laut und intim! Und anschließend wurde auch noch kräftig mit den Jungs getrunken und geschnackt, Beutelkauf war da ja Ehrensache... An dieser Stelle sei auch nochmal Zahni gedankt, der die Band rangeholt hat - extra zu Uwes 50. Geburtstag! (Anmerkung: Uwe ist der Kneipenbesitzer).

Die wiedervereinte US-amerikanische Rockband Rival Schools wird im November für eine Show in Berlin zu Gast sein. Zusätzlich stellt die Combo um Hardcore-Legende Walter Schreifels ein neues Video online. Rival Schools - "Shot After Shot" Dieses Jahr hat die Gruppe einen Vertrag bei Atlantic Records unterzeichnet. Das neue Rival Schools-Album soll schon im kommenden Winter erscheinen. Einen kleinen Vorgeschmack auf die neue Platte kann man sich am 18. November im Berliner Lido holen. Was Schreifels über deutschen Indierock weiß und wie er heute zu Punkrock steht, lest ihr im motor.de-Interview . 2001 gegründet, trennten sich die Rival Schools bereits zwei Jahre darauf wieder, um sich 2008 wieder zu vereinen. Walter Schreifels hatte vorher schon in den Hardcoreformationen Quicksand, Youth Of Today und Gorilla Biscuits mitgewirkt. Zusätzlich ist Schreifels Teilhaber am Some Records-Label, auf dem auch die erste EP der Band erschien. Nach Veröffentlichung des einzigen Studioalbums „United By Fate“ stieg Gitarrist Ian Love im Jahr 2002 aus, um sich seinem Bandprojekt Cardia zu widmen, es folgte der Split der Rival Schools. 2008 tat sich die Band in Originalbesetzung wieder zusammen, spielt seitdem wieder Shows und war gemeinsam mit Jimmy Eat World und The Offspring unterwegs.
Am 18. November werde ich mich trotzdessen ganz und gar dem LES SAVY FAV Gig widmen!

Haemostatic Picnic Races

Diese Band gibts nich mehr... das schonmal vorne weg. Aber die Songs mochte und mag ich trotzdem immer noch gerne hören. Ihr einziges Album heißt Helios! These Are Instructions und ist ne Mischung aus Post-Hardcore und Math-Rock. Mittlerweile ist aus der Band eine weitaus poppigere Gruppe geworden mit dem Namen Pharaos.
Irgendwie gefallen die mir leider nicht so gut wie die Vorgängerband. Wenn ihr Lust habt, euch Haemostatic Picnic Races mal anzuhören, bitte!

Pagdalan

Lang, lang ist's her als ich Pagdalan mal live gesehn habe... aber ich kann mich gut erinnern, dass ich sie ziemlich nett fand. Vor allem an den Frontmann Marc hab ich gute Erinnerungen. Krasse Stimme, sehr emotional usw. Pagdalan kommen aus Leipzig, Gera u.a. und spielen schnellen, sehr schnellen Screamo mit Hardcore-Punk-Elementen.
"Wir haben uns im Herbst 2003 gefunden und arbeiten seit dem hart an unseren Songs. Der Name „Pagdalan“ an sich steht für unser Gefühl, unsere Liebe und Freude mit der wir Musik machen. Pagdalan gibt uns mehr noch als „unity“, es hält uns aktiv, schenkt uns kreative Anreize und treibt uns mit neuen Erfahrungen voran. Hardcore - soll Spaß machen. Unsere Attitüde - welche sich in unseren Songtexten widerspiegelt - lebt von guten und bösen Erfahrungen dieser Welt. Diese Probleme verarbeiten wir in unseren Songs. Von Unrecht und Gewalt, von Freude und Trauer bis zwischenmenschliche Gegebenheiten, die uns beschäftigen. Springt auf - habt Spaß?"
Die Platte Days without Mom hab ich ne ganze Weile rauf und runter gehört. Und zu der Zeit stand ich nichma sonderlich auf Screamo etc. Ich sehe gerade, es war 2006 als ich sie im Club Haldensleben gesehn habe... wow, time runs fast. Die aktuelle Platte heißt Slavery 2.0 und kann kostenlos hier geladen werden.

Sometimes Go

Wieder so ne gute Band durch Zufall entdeckt (danke lastfm-Empfehlungsradio!): Sometimes Go heißt die Band, die aus Giessen kommt. Ingo, Simon, Dennis und Stefan machen schon über zehn Jahre Mukke, zuvor in andern Bands. Mitunter sogar auf der selben Bühne mit Bands wie Hot Water Music, Red Animal War, At the Drive in, Appleseed Cast and so on. Schon mal ne beeindruckende Liste. Aber hat ja ersma nichts zu heißen. Trotzdem haben gerade solche Bands den Geschmack der Jungs offenbar geprägt und so fand man sich 2008 zusammen. Im Sommer wurde dann auch gleich die erste EP aufgenommen, die bis jetzt kostenlos zum Runterladen angeboten wird. Gute Sache. Gute Songs. Gute Musik. Sagte ich gut? Besser: Ziemlich geil. Sometimes Go spielen aber vor allem aus Spaß an der Sache: ne gute Zeit (schon wieder dieses "gut") mit Freunden haben und Mukke machen. So soll es sein! Hier gehts zum MySpace-Profil. Gut! Time to talk: Peter Löwe von Mikrokosmos23 im Gespräch

Peter Löwe (20) ist Sänger und Gitarrist bei Mikrokosmos23 und hat liebenswerterweise für meinen kleinen Blog hier ein paar Fragen beantwortet. Danke schon mal an dieser Stelle. Los geht's...

Hallo Peter. Danke vorab, dass du dir Zeit für ein Interview genommen hast! Prima Sache. Du bist mit deiner Band Mikrokosmos23 zurzeit viel am touren und Konzerte spielen. Wie kriegt ihr das alles auf die Reihe?

Wir touren ja momentan leider nich durchgängig. Wir arbeiten/studieren ja alle. Deswegen klappt das nich direkt zum Album ne Tour zu spielen. Das sind viele viele Wochenenden momentan. Das is einerseits schön weil wir einfach so viel wie möglich spielen wollen. Andererseits ist es scheisse immer nach zwei Tagen wieder in den normalen Alltag einzusteigen. Das is schwierig, aber geht halt nich anders. Wir fiebern auf jeden Fall der Tour im November entgegen. Mehrere Konzerte AM STÜCK. Das macht am meisten Spaß einfach. Und dann noch mit Adolar. Das wird super.

Ihr tourt auch in Österreich und Tschechien. Was habt ihr für Erwartungen an Gigs im Ausland?

Sehr gute Frage. Das wird cool aber man weiß da überhaupt nich was einen erwartet. Wir haben ja schon in Österreich gespielt. Das war auf jeden Fall cool. Sehr kleine Clubs aber tolle Leute, die sich auch voll drüber gefreut haben, dass wir mal dahin kommen. Das is für die Leute im Ausland wahrscheinlich eher was besonderes, weil die nich nach Deutschland kommen werden, um uns zu sehen. Die freuen sich, dass wir kommen, und genießen das wahrscheinlich auf ne andere Art. Auch wenn natürlich weniger Leute dahin kommen...aber das is verständlich und voll ok.

Ihr tourt mit der Band Adolar durch die Lande. Was habt ihr für ein Verhältnis zu den Jungs? Sind es auch irgendwie "Vorbilder"?

Unser Verhältnis is schon was besonderes. Gerade Tom von Adolar is für mich einer meiner besten Freunde geworden und ein sehr wichtiger Mensch. Ich hab schon verdammt viele Menschen über die Band kennengelernt aber Adolar sind speziell. Vorbilder würd ich nich sagen. Unsere Band gibts schon sehr viel länger als Adolar, deshalb geht das mit Vorbild sein schon mal gar nicht. Auch musikalisch sind wir, wenn man alles ganz genau betrachtet, total verschieden. Was voll ok ist. Das wird niemanden im Publikum stören und uns sowieso nich. Einfach weils tolle Leute sind, mit denen man gern Zeit verbringt und Abenteuer erlebt.

Ihr kommt ursprünglich aus Meißen und wohnt jetzt in größeren Städten. Findest du es wichtig als Musiker in einem entsprechenden Umfeld zu leben? Oder hattet ihr einfach nur die Kleinstadt-Tristesse satt?

Natürlich hatten wir die Kleinstadt-Tristesse satt. Wir sind junge Leute. Aber wichtig in einem entsprechenden Umfeld zu leben, halt ich für Quatsch. Man sollte nich aus Hamburg oder Berlin kommen müssen, um "cool" oder "erfolgreich" zu sein. Das nervt doch.

Wie oft probt ihr und wie entsteht ein Song bei euch?

Wir haben leider nich so viel Zeit zum Proben, is klar. Aber wenns mal zu einer Zeit kommt, in der wir Bock und Spaß dran haben neue Sachen zu machen, dann fädeln wir das schon so ein, dass wir halt öfter mal alle 4 in Dresden sind. Und dann wird halt durchgezogen. Die Songs entstehen eigentlich über einen längeren Zeitraum immer erst zu Viert im Proberaum.

In vielen Reviews werden immer wieder Vergleiche mit Bands wie Captain Planet, Turbostaat, Adolar usw gezogen. Wo liegen eure musikalischen Wurzeln? Und welche Platte läuft bei dir grad im Player?

Unsere Wurzeln liegen schon bei vielen der unterm durchschnitt-Bands. Jet Black, Katzenstreik, Captain Planet usw... einfach Musik, die wir zu der jeweiligen Zeit gehört haben. Logisch. Da war dieses Label, auf dem unser neues Album ja jetz auch veröffentlicht wurde, schon sehr prägend. Momentan hör ich - also wirklich einfach das was am meisten läuft, ohne jetz grundsätzliche Lieblingsbands zu beachten - (ich hol jetz mein mp3 Player und check das): Balmorhea (für mich Neuentdeckung und einfach schöne Musik), EA 80 (das Album "Grüner Apfel" wiederentdeckt), Future Islands (grandioses Konzert letztens gesehen), Interpol ("Antics" wiederentdeckt) und Petula (tolles neues tape).

Ihr habt ein Musikvideo abgedreht, das optisch sehr ansprechend ist. Euer Platten-Cover ist von einer indonesischen Künstlerin. Wie wichtig ist euch Artwork bei euren Veröffentlichungen?

Um Artwork kümmert sich meist Tom. Das is gut so. Mir gefällt das selbst alles sehr gut. Ich freu mich, wenns gut aussieht. Das Musikvideo wurde auch von Tom "erdacht", gefällt mir auch sehr gut. Musikvideos sind so Sachen, mit denen man irgendwann seine Enkel zu Tode langweilen kann, aber man selbst freut sich drüber.

Apropos Video: Hab gehört euer Video zu "Knightrider Generation" soll auf MTV laufen? Stimmt das? 

Ich empfange kein MTV, muss das auch nich unbedingt da sehn, um mich mit dem Video gut zu fühlen. Aber ich glaub Toni, unser Bassist, erzählte mal, dass er es gesehen hätte. Kein Plan. Aber wenn das so ist, wär doch cool... 
Eure neue Platte "Memorandum" ist beim Label unterm durchschnitt erschienen. Was bedeutet euch das? Und wie geht ihr mit der aktuellen Präsenz in den Musikmedien um?
Unterm durchschnitt ist eine Spitzensache! Auf jeden Fall. Sind ja selbst Fans, schon immer gewesen und werdens auch immer sein. Sehr wichtiges Label für wichtige Musik in diesem Land. Für uns bedeutet das, dass wir uns freuen da Teil von zu sein. Und auf nem anderen Label wär das auch alles nich so schön geworden. Musikmedien sind was seltsames. Aber natürlich auch interessant. Klar, jeder liest und hört sowas. Manchmal ist das interessant, was so in Sachen rein interpretiert wird, aber im Endeffekt bringt das einfach nur Aufmerksamkeit, die hoffentlich dazu führt, dass viele nette Leute zu den Konzerten kommen und wir ne schöne Zeit zusammen haben.

Produziert wurde das Album von Kurt Ebelhäuser. Wie war die Zusammenarbeit?

Kurt Ebelhäuser ist ein Spitzentyp. Blackmail und Scumbucket sind super Bands. Und mit dem zu arbeiten, war auch son bisschen eine Ehre. Sehr angenehm, sehr lehrreich und auch ergiebig.

Welche Weiterentwicklung siehst du zur Vorgängerplatte?

Hat sich ja einiges verändert, im Songwriting, in den Texten und natürlich auch für jeden persönlich. Letzteres wirkt dabei stark auf alles andere ein. Das ist logisch und fühlt sich auch gut und richtig an.
Was euern Musikstil angeht, so liest man immer wieder die Genres Emo, Punk, Indie, Hardcore, Screamo, Postrock usw. Wo seht ihr euch da? Schublade auf zu?
Schublade eher mal vergessen... bringt doch auch niemandem was. Ich bin großer Fan von Genre-Beschreibungen und Namedropping aber man muss das Medium auch beachten. Für Bands wie uns gibts in den großen Medien immer Standardvergleiche. Das nervt und gibt mir das Gefühl, dass sich der Autor vor nem Review oder sonst was, gar nich mit der Musik auseinander gesetzt hat. Ich find nich, dass wir wie Turbostaat oder Escapado klingen. Obwohl das natürlich tolle Bands sind. Da gibts doch auch Sachen hinter dem Horizont.

Was sind eure musikalischen Ziele? Gibts nen Masterplan? Oder komme was wolle?

Komme was wolle!!!! Da is in letzter Zeit schon soviel passiert mit dem niemand gerechnet hätte. Lass es bitte einfach passieren. Bleibt spannend und macht Spaß!

Time to post some friends music again: Symorowes

Frei nach dem Motto "Support your local music scene" poste ich heute mal was über meine Homies von Symorowes. Drei meiner sehr guten Freunde (Maix, Acki und Christian grüße ich an dieser Stelle) machen schon so lange Musik zusammen wie ich alt bin, oder so... egal. Jedenfalls beschreiben sie ihren Stil selbst als "psychedelic pop goes instrumental math-/postrock". WTF? denkt ihr jetz? Dann hört mal hier rein, Aufnahmen sind nicht die besten aber man bekommt nen Eindruck von dem Sound. Seit 2005 gibts sie in der Formation, vorher hatten sie ne akkurate Kleinstadt-Grungeband. Die Zeiten sind aber passé - olé! Versuche mit nem Sänger scheiterten bislang, daher wird der musikalische Weg als Trio weitergeführt. I pretty much like it if you know what I mean. Am Sonntag (3. Oktober) spielen Symorowes einen Gig (und das is echt selten) in Berlin. Anlass ist die Ausstellungseröffnung Based on Paper II. Location: secondhome/Oudenarder Str. 31/Berlin-Wedding. Beginn: 19 Uhr.

Was ihr schon immer wissen wolltet... Hardcore in Deutschland

In der (noch) aktuellen Zeitschrift Visions (ich kaufe mir die echt selten) ist ein achtseitiges Special über Hardcore in Deutschland - von den Anfängen, bis zur Weiterentwicklung der verschiedenen Subkulturen und hin zu aktuellen Einflüssen. Der Artikel wird durch Interviews mit Musikern und ihre Sichtweise auf die Geschichte des deutschen Hardcore ergänzt. Kleine Specials wie über das Medium Vinyl und wichtige Wegbereiter-Platten machen die Story rund.
Ich hab mir mal die Mühe gemacht, die Seiten alle einzuscannen und als Zip-Datei zu verpacken. Vielleicht hat ja der eine oder andere Lust, sich den Artikel mal durchzulesen. Meinungen sind erwünscht!

Mikrokosmos23 & Dresco @ KuBa Kalbe

Vor ein paar Tagen hatte ich einen Flyer gepostet für die Show von Mikrokosmos23 und Dresco im KuBa in Kalbe. Natürlich war ich auch dort - wenn schon mal ein Konzert hier in der sonst so kargen Altmark stattfindet, dann ja wohl mit mir. Auf also nach Kalbe, die Location befand sich für mich sehr versteckt an alten Bahngleisen gelegen. Im Dunkeln gar nicht so einfach, aber ich konnte ein paar jungen Leuten folgen, die das selbe Ziel hatten wie ich. Nach längerem Warten hat dann die lokale Band Endstation den bunten Reigen eröffnet. Keller Punkrock wie er überall auf der ganzen Welt von pubertären Jungs gespielt wird, die mit ihren Texten auch versuchen, gesellschaftskritische Attitude zu vermitteln.

Nun gut, ich war ja wegen anderen Bands gekommen: Zum Beispiel wegen Dresco. Die Jungs aus Tangermünde (bei Stendal) haben mich bereits bei zwei vorherigen Gigs überzeugen können. Hier kann man mit guten Gewissen sagen, dass die Jungs von Emo im alten Sinne beeinflusst sind. Ein bisschen Punk dazu deutsche Texte machen die Mische genießbar, und sogar mehr als das: Ich finde Dresco machen tollen Indie, der mal aus der Einheitsmasse von Nachwuchsbands heraussticht. Sänger David, den ich schon von seiner Band Empty Guns kenne, hat für meinen Geschmack eine tolle Stimmlage für diese Musikrichtung.

Dann waren Mikrokosmos23 an der Reihe. Ich hatte mich ja bisher vom ganzen Hype um die Band, die bei dem Label Unterm Durchschnitt ist, eher nicht beeindrucken lassen. Erstmal abwarten, dachte ich. Druckvoller auf der Bühne als die Vorgängerband ging es hier zur Sache. Sänger Peter bringt einen Gewissen Hardcore/Screamo-Flair in das Ganze und die Melodien sind auf Anhieb nicht leicht zu erkennen. Das war auch der Grund, warum ich an MK23 nicht sofort rangekommen bin. Mir fehlten klare Songstrukturen wie bei Dresco. Aber is ja am Ende eh alles Geschmackssache. Musikalisch waren MK23 natürlich super und durchaus professionell. Wahrscheinlich liegt mein Desinteresse auch daran, dass ich mir vorher keine Songs angehört hatte und daher beim Konzert völlig unbeteiligt war. Ihr Debütalbum heißt "Memorandum" und ist seit Anfang September verfügbar. Myspace-Profil von Mikrokosmos23.

Noch ein paar Worte zur Location. Das KuBa ist für die Region hier meiner Meinung nach eine echte Bereicherung für die Szene. In DIY-Manier werden hier Konzerte regelmäßig, wenn auch nicht oft, veranstaltet - in diesem Falle von Jugendlichen, die das als Projekt aufgezogen hatten und dabei auch mehr über Konzertorganisation etc lernen konnten. Gute Sache das. Und der Club an sich ist echt schrammlig und abgefuckt, aber so mag ichs ja. Der Eintritt zum Konzert war übrigens frei, was umso mehr für die Leute spricht, die es nicht auf Kohlemachen abgesehen haben.

Ich werde jedenfalls bei der nächsten Gelegenheit wieder den Weg nach Kalbe antreten, wenn es sich für die Bands lohnt. In diesem Falle hat es sich gelohnt. Und dass ich bei der Heimfahrt von der Polizei kontrolliert wurde, hat mir mal wieder gezeigt, wie nervös ich noch sein kann, obwohl ich nicht alkoholisiert war. (Die zwei Becks Lemon bei der allerersten Band waren zu dem Zeitpunkt bereits ausgenüchtert).
